PNG Sports to benefit from Townsville direct flight

SPORTS, mainly rugby league, especially SP Hunters and north Queensland intrust teams will be the biggest beneficiary of the Townsville to Port Moresby direct flights.

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill when giving his official speech at the inauguration of the Townsville to Port Moresby direct flight last Friday, said that these sporting nation teams will benefit out of this service. “At the cultural and sporting level and sporting level, we also share our love for the great game of rugby league, which is the national sport of Papua New Guinea,” he said.

“The direct service will enable more of our rugby league supporters to attend Cowboys home matches. I hope it will also lead to stronger ties between rugby league in PNG and the Cowboys in the future.

“Our own PNG Hunters will benefit from this new service and make their participation in the Queensland Intrust Super Cup competition much easier in terms of travel requirements.

“This service will also benefit supporters of Blackhawks and the MacKay Cutters when they travel to play the hunters in PNG,” Mr O’Neill said.

Sir Frederick Reiher said: “I know there are strong links already in sport, especially rugby league, but also between our church communities, schools, health and other community groups,” he said.

“The direct services will benefit Townsville and regional Queensland Rugby League teams playing in the lntrust Cup, as well as our own PNG SP Hunters.

“Papua New Guinea has many fans of the North Queensland Cowboys, who will now find it easier to travel to watch their home games.”

“I also hope residents of North Queensland will take up the opportunity this new service provides to explore the many attractions Papua New Guinea has to offer.”

“I hope Townsville residents will also visit Papua New Guinea to watch your Blackhawks play against our Hunters in the State League Competition. This new service will also provide opportunities for other sports to compete including women’s sports which we at Air Niugini are proud to be encouraging.

“Healthy sporting competition builds stronger communities and goodwill between peoples and Air Niugini will lend a hand to encourage it in every way we can.”
